Our Wrestlers Earn Lots of Hardware!

We had a very successful weekend for our junior and senior wrestling teams. After another long season of extremely hard work in the wrestling room, on the athletic centre stairs, and in the weight room, our wrestlers produced more excellent results at the provincial tournament. At the request of the School Sport Nova Scotia (SSNS) and its member schools, we held provincials at King’s-Edgehill School again this year. Our student-athletes made the most of their home mat advantage, not to mention their technical skills, fitness, and grit, to take home a lot of hardware.

The juniors competed on Friday. Finn Turner-Galaise ‘26 brought home a bronze medal from his first competition this year. He wrestled very technical matches against older and more experienced competition. Giacomo Pogliani ‘27 came fourth in a tournament in which he improved during every match. We look forward to big things from these young men in the future.

Our seniors wrestled today. As you can see from the picture, they all brought home medals. Those who did not win an individual placement improved immensely after wrestling some of their best matches. Unfortunately, Claire Morton ‘24 had no competition, so she brought home an auto-gold. Justin Day ‘22 fought through pain and fatigue to wrestle four matches and finish third in his weight class. David Helyer ‘22 wrestled some of the most exciting matches of the day, in a tough weight class, to come second. Team captain Greg Otto ‘22 dominated his division with highly technical performances until he faced a very tough opponent in his final. He took second place as well. Stanislav Matkovskyi’s ‘22 matches were so one-sided he didn’t wrestle long enough to break a sweat. He won gold in some of the most skillful matches of the tournament. Finally, Megan Mattie ‘22 had the best day of her wrestling career so far when she out-wrestled and out-lasted her competition to win another gold. Altogether, our senior boys team accumulated enough points to finish second overall and our senior girls team also came second (by one point!) despite only having one wrestler on the mat.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Marc Ffrench, Joe Seagram, Jennie Weisner and her sports therapy staff, including Sue Cole and Kyle Seagram, all our student volunteers, Jennifer Liang ‘22, and the AC maintenance staff for working hard all day to help make KES the wrestling destination of the province.
Finally, a massive thank you to Kim Walsh. Without his tireless work during the last several weeks, talking the SSNS into allowing this event to happen by promising (and delivering) a tournament that would follow all COVID-19 protocols, the wrestlers of this province wouldn’t have had an opportunity to compete and improve.
