Cross Country Provincials 2021 Recap

One of the reasons that I love this particular provincial cross-country course in Bridgewater at the Osprey Ridge Golf Club is that we raced here last week for Western Regionals. Did someone have a good day of racing? I can compare their time from last week and give you a good hint about that. There is no hiding from the clock. All of our runners placed lower than they did last week. They were, after all, running against the entire province. Still, it’s easy to think that you had a terrible day if you placed in the top ten last week, and today you don’t crack the top 20. However, as I tell my athletes again and again - how you race, the effort you put forth, is in your control. How others race is not in your control (we are not a contact sport).

All 11 Highlanders who raced today improved their time. WOW! They deserve our congratulations and praise. Below, you will see how many seconds they removed from their race last week on the same course. That is a remarkable achievement by each member of our team. As much as I would like to leave it here and not single out any particular effort, I do have to say that Owen Seely ‘22 had an over-the-top race today as he led our senior boys. That’s fine enough but considering that Owen didn’t even qualify for our regional team last year, and here he is leading our varsity team at provincials - that’s a heck of an accomplishment. He did that by running one minute and 42 seconds faster. On his heels and our most improved runner from last week was our team leader and most experienced KES harrier, Quinn Emery ‘22. Once again, leading by example, Quinn removed 1:56 from his race time in just seven days.

This was a fabulous day of racing to end what has been in many ways the most enjoyable KES cross country team that Mr. Brodi Robinson and I have had the pleasure of coaching. Thank you, team!
