Rugby Alumnae Continue to Represent in U Sport

Over the past ten years, 18 of our King’s-Edgehill School alumnae have gone on to play rugby at the university (U-Sport) level! Five of these alumnae are still in the playing ranks and are nearing the end of their fall varsity seasons. Despite playing on four different teams in various parts of the country, each of these grads have played major roles in their teams’ successes this season.

Close to home here at Acadia University, two class of 2018 grads, Kenzie Cecchetto ‘18 and Morgan Rogers ‘18, have been key contributors to the fourth nationally ranked, and league leading Axewomen. Both Kenzie and Morgan came to King’s-Edgehill as hockey players and were captains on our prep girls hockey team, but left as rugby stalwarts. For the Axewomen, Kenzie has had a fantastic season so far as a starting member of the Wolfville squad, while Morgan has played important minutes in many of the team’s games as well.

Kenzie and Morgan’s former teammate at KES, Heather Stanton ‘18 has started every game for the Saint Mary’s Huskies and has provided valuable leadership on and off the field for the young team. A Digby, NS, native, Heather came to KES as a basketball player and track athlete. At her first ever rugby tournament, she was picked out of the crowd by a number of university coaches who recognized her athletic ability and potential. Heather’s rugby prowess was on full display all season long and provided her team with much excitement thanks to her stellar defense and explosive runs.

Rounding out the Atlantic Canada contingent is 2020 grad Camryn Kleynhans ’20 who, in her first year, has earned a starting role on the sixth ranked perennial powerhouse StFX X-Women. Camryn, who once represented Canada at the under 18 level, wracked up 25 tackles in her very first U-Sport game and was named StFX athlete of the week once already this season for her strong play.

The fifth and final former KES Rugby alumna playing in the U-Sport ranks is 2018 grad Alex Ondo ‘18 who is in her final year with the third ranked University of Ottawa Gee Gees. Ondo, who was a star soccer player and wrestler here at KES, had never touched a rugby ball before her Grade 10 year. She has represented Canada at the under-20 level and has also been named a U-Sport All-Canadian three times. She currently leads both her team and the Quebec conference in scoring with nine tries over five regular season games.

Although Heather’s SMU team has been eliminated from playoff contention, the other four girls are in the midst of conference playoffs and have their sights set on earning a berth into the eight team U-Sport national championships which will be held at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario in early November.
