Athletes of the Week

“Athletes of the Week” (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our Athletic Philosophy and School Mission Statement emphasizing gentleness and learning and dignity and respect.

For the Week of April 12th - 18th
Senior Girl - Sarah Hardy has been an absolute force on the rugby pitch this year despite the fact that this is only her first season playing. Her unique mix of size, strength, and speed make her almost unstoppable. Sarah demonstrated all three of those attributes as she played a major role in our two wins against Horton High School and Park View Education Center. In our game against Horton, Sarah scored a brilliant 70 m try, while in our game against Park View she touched the ball down three times on three very dynamic plays for 15 points. Sarah has emerged as a leader both on and off the pitch for our team and will no doubt be a major contributor as we continue our season. Sarah also had a great weekend with the hockey team. She continues to be a work horse and sets a great example for the rest of her team. We are excited to see her hard work pay off during this off season. Congratulations, Sarah!

Senior Boy - Stanislav Matkovskyi : Nova Scotia held the first virtual Provincial Swim Championship and King’s-Edgehill swimmers competed over 3 days. Stanislav produced best times for his swims. He is a determined athlete sharing his time with swimming and wrestling and then with track and field.  To achieve this success, Stanislav has swim practices in the early mornings and again in the afternoons. Well done, Stanislav!

Junior Boy - Ryan MacDougall: In the first virtual Provincial Championship held by Swim Nova Scotia, KES swimmers competed over 3 days. We had 15 swimmers represented and almost everyone had best times to boast. Ryan, who has spent the best part of the year struggling, showed that hard work is paying off, and he managed best times in every event he swam. He exhibited skills that he has learned and improved upon over the past 3-4 months. Well done, Ryan!

Junior Girl - Jessica Etou has been training hard with the Senior Girls’ Rugby team since we began practices early in the mornings at the end of winter. Her positive attitude and desire to learn has been noted by both her teammates and coaches alike. In our recent sevens game versus Park View Education Center, Jessica took a pass from her teammate and raced down the sideline over 50 m for her first try of the season. Despite the aggressive nature of the sport, Jess has continued to uphold herself in a dignified and respectful manner and has even been known to apologize to members of the other team after she has tackled them. Keep up the great work Jess!

For the Week of April 19th  – 25th
Senior Girl - Jennifer Liang and her partner Jason Hu contributed through their fine play and victories in the round robin to the KES victory at badminton Districts last week. She demonstrated great sportsmanship and athletic ability in her play during the tournament, where she served consistently and made good shot choices. Congratulations, Jennifer!

Senior Boy - Lucas Tam and his partner Kris Chou won their matches in the Districts badminton competition in straight sets. This helped to lead KES to the District championship. Lukas, who works as hard in practices as in matches, was unparalleled in the accuracy of his serves, his fine touch at the net, and in great shot selection overall. Congratulations, Lukas!

Junior Boy - Alejandro Vidal is one of the first players to join the Minor Prep Baseball Programme, and he has made tremendous gains in the field and at the plate. He’s really fitting in with the prep athletes and trending in the right direction to be an impact player at the prep level as he continues his development. Keep up the great work, Ale!

Junior Girl - Ava Shearer was again dominant in our recent rugby game against Avon View's Grade 9/10 7’s team. On the opening play of the game, a speedy player from AV took the opening kick off and raced down the sideline for what looked like a sure try, that is until Ava came out of no where and tackled her from behind. Just minutes later, Ava scored her first of 3 trys in the game and led our team to a convincing 15-0 win to cap-off what has been an undefeated season for our Grade 9/10 7’s team. Ava has averaged better than 2 trys a game this season and has shown she has a very bright future ahead of her. Well done, Ava!
