Athletes of the Week

“Athletes of the Week” (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our Athletic Philosophy and School Mission Statement emphasizing gentleness and learning and dignity and respect.

For the Week of March 29th – April 4th
Senior Girl - Hannah Stilwell has been the leader for our KES Prep swimming programme throughout the year no matter how difficult the daily rigor of academics and athletics have been.  Our swim team has been the only sport team to not have an in-person competition - all of them have been virtual.  However, Hannah has continued to be positive and post all-time best times.  She most recently was awarded the provincial 'Athlete of the Week' honours by Sport Nova Scotia. Keep up the great work, Hannah!

Senior Boy - Jem Logan: The Senior Boys' Rugby team opened the season with an inter-squad game between red and blue. Jem Logan captained the blue team and, along with Ethan Hiscott, led it to victory with stiff defense and monstrous offense. He coordinated his team from the fly-half position, rallying them against Ken and Righo's red team in pouring rain, heavy winds, and low temperatures. His play was characterized by smart decision making, excellent distribution from the #10 position, and hard running. Unfortunately, he had to leave the field before the game was over with a knee injury. We wish Jem a speedy recovery.

For the Week of April 5th – 11th
Senior Girl - Jill Griffith: In our exhibition games against the perennial powerhouse team from Avon View, Jill turned in what might have been the most dominant performance by a player in their first-ever game in 10 years at KES. Playing the very important fly-half position, Jill organized our back line on both attack and defense. Her speed, agility, and strength made it seem as if she had been playing rugby for years. Jill scored 2 trys on the day and set up another to lead what was a dynamic attack for our girls. Jill’s play caught the eye of Rugby Nova Scotia’s Provincial coach, Jack Hanratty, who was immediately impressed with her poise, athleticism, and skill. With only a dozen practices under her belt, the sky is the limit for Jill’s potential on the rugby pitch. Great work, Jill!

Senior Boy - Ethan Hiscott led the Senior Boys' Rugby team to a decisive 30-0 victory over our cross-town rivals Avon View. His smart decision making, strong running, and stiff defence rallied our boys to a big win that hopefully sets a pattern for the rest of the season, and proved the boys chose wisely in their vote for captains. Best of luck for the reminder of the season, Ethan!

Junior Boy - Harrison Klein stepped up at the last minute to play on the Senior Boys' Rugby team during our rugby day on April 9 against Avon View. His aggressive, technical defence helped deny the opposition the gain line almost every time they had the ball, while his speed and smart running lines helped him score a try for the team against bigger, older opponents. Good work, Harrison.

Junior Girl: Reegan Wagg’s play in practice so far this year has been phenomenal. In fact, many times players forgot she was only in the 9th grade. It was fitting then that on the opening kickoff of our exhibition Grade 9 and 10s 7s game against Avon View, Reegan took the ball and burst through the opposition’s defense for an emphatic try. As the day went on, Reegan’s play seemed only to improve and was almost unstoppable. It seemed that every time she touched the ball, she was exploding over the try line for another score for the Highlanders. In her first-ever rugby game, Reegan is clearly on track to be a dominant force for our team for years to come. Well done, Reegan!
