Meet our IB Visual Arts Students #4
Our Grade 12 students in the IB Visual Arts and the Academic Art courses have come together this term to complete the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts programme. The students are preparing for their final Exhibition and exam which will take place in April. After the March break, our students will be focusing on setting up their exhibition, writing a rationale and exhibition texts, and uploading their artwork.
In April, the exhibition will be displayed for two weeks in our Stanfield Dining Hall/McLellan Annex.
It has taken months of preparation, and each student is required to produce a number of studio artworks based on their direction or theme. This year, we have twenty Grade 12 students who will be exhibiting their work. The Grade 11 students will also take part in this exhibition by helping the Grade 12 students display their work, and they will also be given the opportunity to exhibit two of their artworks.
During the next month, we will be showcasing our artists in our weekly Newsletter along with one of their favourite art projects they have completed during this two-year course. I hope you enjoy reading the profiles of our budding, young artists.
This week we are highlighting Jiahe (Aaron) Lu, Chris Nitsch and Alena Wood.
Aaron Lu is from Shanghai, China and he has attended KES for four years.
Aaron’s artwork choice to share is AMG GT (acrylic painting)
I chose to share this painting because I had decided to paint the front of this car, which is my favourite car, the AMG GT, Mercedes Benz. The colour is also a classic colour. Since my childhood, I have been interested in car design and collecting “Hot Wheels”. I have also been interested in architectural design. With the painting, I wanted to focus on the front of the vehicle and have a close-up perspective.
Future Plans: I plan on attending university and focusing on vehicle design in the United States.
Chris Nitsch is from Kleve, West Germany and he has attended KES for two years.
Chris’s artwork choice to share is called Gluck Auf (Good Luck) (mixed media)
I chose to share my mixed media drawing since it is related to my home and the workers in the mine. They have been closing the mines over the years and this is a tribute to the miners. It is also a refence to my soccer team. Gluck Auf means good luck in German. (For the miners going into the mine and for the players on the field.) The hammers are the tools that the miners take into the ground. Kampf Bahn is the refence to the first stadium built in 1904. I enjoyed working in layers and building up the art piece.
Future Plans: I plan to go to university in Spain either taking International Relations or Business.
Alena Wood is from Liverpool, Nova Scotia and she has attended KES for two years.
Alena’s artwork choice to share is called Purple Haze (acrylics on stretched canvas)
I completed a self portrait last year and want to paint another portrait. I chose the three-quarter view and wanted to simplify the designs using shapes for the hair. I chose the colours of purple and green. The hair is worked into the design by using lines and shapes. My focus is on design.
Future Plans: I want to take a Gap year next year abroad, and then I plan on attending Dalhousie University the following year and take Dental Hygiene.
