Meet our IB Visual Arts Students #3
Our Grade 12 students in the IB Visual Arts and the Academic Art courses have come together this term to complete the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts programme. The students are preparing for their final Exhibition and exam which will take place in April. After the March break, our students will be focusing on setting up their exhibition, writing a rationale and exhibition texts, and uploading their artwork.
In April, the exhibition will be displayed for two weeks in our Stanfield Dining Hall/McLellan Annex.
It has taken months of preparation, and each student is required to produce a number of studio artworks based on their direction or theme. This year, we have twenty Grade 12 students who will be exhibiting their work. The Grade 11 students will also take part in this exhibition by helping the Grade 12 students display their work, and they will also be given the opportunity to exhibit two of their artworks.

During the next month, we will be showcasing our artists in our weekly Newsletter along with one of their favourite art projects they have completed during this two-year course. I hope you enjoy reading the profiles of our budding, young artists.
This week we are highlighting Allie Martin, Melly Chen, Hidemi Sato, Lonnie Luo, Ayumi Goto, and Alvaro Arceo Marentes.
Allie Martin is from Halifax, NS, and she has been at KES since Grade 9 (4 years).
Allie’s artwork choice to share is Lookoff Point (acrylic painting on Masonite 4 feet x 4 feet).
I chose to share this acrylic painting because this “Lookoff Point” is part of my hometown and it is a place where Dad and I would hike to. It is a great spot to view storms and the crashing waves. This image was taken from a photo that I had taken earlier. This is one of my largest canvases that I have worked on. I enjoyed working on the larger format, I was able to focus on the details and texture, especially the rocks.
Future Plans: I plan to study Biology at Saint Mary’s University and to also play soccer.
Melly Chen is from Zhejiang, China and she has been at KES for 2 ½ years.
Melly’s artwork choice to share is Self Portrait (chalk pastels on paper).
I chose to share my Self Portrait drawing because I was very pleased with the end results, especially the eyes. One thing about working with chalk, it is easier to blend the skin. I was inspired by the post impressionist artist, Degas. He was known for approaching his drawings with lots of lines. I took this photo of myself and wanted to change the composition. Focusing on part of my face.
Future Plans: I plan to attend university either in China or Canada. University of British Columbia for Architecture or Clothing Design in China.
Hidemi Sato is from Miyagi, Japan, and she has been at KES for 3 years.
Hidemi’s artwork choice to share is Moon, Wind, Flowers, Birds and Lights (collage on hand-made paper).
I enjoyed working with the handmade paper and designing the collage. I was influenced by the artist Rex Ray with his use of shapes and design. The handmade paper was made in Japan with symbols and motifs from Japan. The words that I wrote throughout the collage are the title: Moon, Wind, Flowers, Birds and Light. A tribute to nature. This collage inspired a few other art works.
Future Plans: I plan to attend university in Japan (English or Business).
Lonnie Luo is from Hengyang, China and he has been at KES for 3 years.
Lonnie’s artwork choice to share is called Zhuhai, China (oil painting).
I chose to share this oil painting because I took this photograph of the fishing boats in Zhuhai, China. I loved the photo because there was a sense of calmness to it and the reflections on the water. The boats are typically used by the fisherman in the area. The colours are warm and bright. I enjoyed working with the oil paint.
Future Plans: I plan to attend university in the U.S. taking either Engineering, Commerce or Life Sciences.
Ayumi Goto is from Kyoto, Japan and has been at KES for 3 years.
Ayumi’s artwork choice to share is called Sky tree (Tokyo) (transfer and watercolours)
I chose to share my transfer drawing of the building called Sky Tree. It is the tallest building in Japan. I have climbed the building to the top of the glass look out and taken photographs. The building is very strong and built well because of the earthquakes. I enjoyed working with the transfer process since you can work in layers.
Future Plans: I plan to go to university in the U.S. at Aeronautical University.
Alvaro Arceo Marentes is from Peninsula de Yucatan, Mexico, and has been at KES for 3 years.
Alvaro’s artwork choice to share is called Distorted View (acrylics on stretched canvas).
I love Music and Art. I wanted to join my two passions in one painting. I did my Comparative Study on Picasso and Diego Rivera. I had researched Cubism and wanted to try that style in my painting. I included musical instruments and used a warm colour palette. I was pleased with the results.
Future Plans: I plan to attend university in Mexico and study Medicine.
