Senior Girls Soccer - More Grit and Determination!

Last Saturday afternoon’s Western Regional D1 Girls’ Soccer Championship game was held at Horton High School between the 1st place Horton Griffins and the 2nd place King’s-Edgehill School. Earlier league results between the two teams, a 0-0 tie at KES and a 4-0 Horton win on Griffin home soil, would mean nothing in this winner-take-all battle to determine the Western Region’s representative in the provincial championship play in semi-final round this coming Saturday. The teams have great respect for one another and the strengths each possess. Horton’s athletic and very direct style of play would be countered by the technical passing preference of KES. Whatever the style, the game promised to be an exciting one indeed. With plenty of back and forth action, some good scoring chances by each team and never-say-die tackling on display, the score after ninety-minutes was tied 0-0. Not much separated the teams, so, into two fifteen-minute, extra-time halves the teams would go. After thirty minutes of arduous, exhausting, and energy-sapping overtime, the score was still tied 0-0. With five minutes left in overtime, KES Grade 11 team co-captain Jill Griffith had an excellent chance to win it for KES as she stepped out of defence, drove forward, and hit a rocket of a shot that was on its way into the top corner…only for it to be stopped with the outstretched arms of the horizontal diving Horton goalkeeper. It was truly a fantastic shot followed with an equally incredible save! In playoffs, when a winning result is needed and overtime has been played, both teams lined up for the nerve-wracking penalty kick shootout. As much as our girls had practiced their kicks, for some reasons still unknown, we could not hold our nerve. In the end, only four shooters were needed by each team, and to their credit, Horton scored 3 goals to just 1 for KES. With the loss, Horton would move on to play the Capital Region winning Halifax West High School this Saturday.

For KES our competitive season is over. We are truly grateful and fortunate to have been able to play at all this fall. We thank Mr. Seagram, Ms. Cole, and Mr. Walsh for allowing us to play and being able to have a fall season in this year of uncertainty due to COVID-19.

Mrs. Dufour and I are very proud of the girls’ effort, the quality of game they played, and the way in which they represented King’s-Edgehill School throughout the season.  Just wait until next year!!
