Our Emerging Leader – Jessica Etou

Now that we have the first few months of school under our belts, we will be profiling some of our extraordinary leaders in the Junior School. These students take on various leadership roles and learn many valuable skills and lessons along the way. While we are fortunate to have wonderful leaders in our Senior School, it is important to be aware of the next crop of leaders currently making their way through our Junior School.

Grade 9 Student Jessica Etou originally from Congo but who now lives in Montreal, is the first of Our Emerging Leaders to be profiled. This is Jessica’s first year at our School, but her transition into our community has been a smooth one thanks in part because her two brothers, Brisnel ’20 and Righo (current Head Boy) were once in the same position as her.

Jessica is a no-nonsense type of person who is very detail-oriented and looks at situations with a unique perspective. A great example of this could be seen at our recent Junior School Halloween activity when Jess thought that gathering data about the event from the Junior School cohort would be a valuable way to evaluate our event and gain insights for future years. Jessica was quick to jump in and escort one of our youngest Junior students who was apprehensive about taking part in the costume judging contest.  She is a natural leader, ready to support those around her.

What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership is a capacity and a competency. Being in control makes people more confident and leads them to a goal.

What words would people use to describe your leadership style?
I am someone who people can trust, and I am very loyal. Organization is also very important to me.

Who do you look up to when it comes to leadership?
My dad. He is a president of a company and he always helps his teammates learn things. He is a very smart man who always shares what he knows with others and I want to be able to do that too.

What are your goals for the year?
I would like to improve my English and learn other languages like Spanish and maybe even Japanese or Mandarin. I’d also like to try new sports because there are so many opportunities to try new things. At the end of the year, I’d like to look back and see that I improved myself and grew as a person.
