Rugby is Alive and Well!

When we were forced to close our doors at KES and to move to distance learning due to COVID-19 restrictions, the door also closed on the highly-anticipated high school rugby season that occurs in the Spring term. While this meant that our Grade 12 student-athletes were not able to play their final high school season, a few have since been able to return to the pitch this fall with some of their former teammates.

Here in Nova Scotia, Rugby Nova Scotia hosted a Fall competition that quenched some of the rugby thirst some of our girls have had. In the Junior 7s division, current students and Stewards Maya Faucher and Megan Mattie suited up with our local club team, Valley Rugby Union, alongside former KES rugby star and current Mount Allison student Courtney Ells (2018-20). The three girls did fantastic winning every game until they matched up against the Halifax Rugby Football Club’s team which had two of its own KES alumnae on their roster. First year Dal students Camryn Kleynhans (2016-20) and Jordyn MacIsaac (2019-20) would have been teammates last season here at KES in the spring, but now saw themselves pitted against three of their former classmates. While these five under 18 players competed in the Junior 7s event, Camryn, Jordyn, and Courtney also participated in the Senior Women’s 10s competition hosted the previous day. In this senior event, two more King’s-Edgehill connections were on hand as former Head Boy and current Dal student Evan Logan (2014-20) played in the Men’s competition while former KES hockey and rugby captain Kenzie Cecchetto (2014-18) joined the fray on the women’s side.

While this was all going on in Nova Scotia, a little further east another former KES student-athlete was making waves on the pitch, except this time in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Eva Redmond (2018-20) and her Swilers Rugby Club Women’s team won the Newfoundland U19 Club Championships!!

With the excellent turnouts at our weekly rugby club nights, combined with the great performances by our Alumni, it is clear that despite the challenges, rugby is alive and well here at King’s-Edgehill.
