A 'Dear John' that is Nice to Hear

For the past six years, I have had the pleasure to teach Grade 12 student, Miss Nicola du Toit, music and to coach her in skiing, and she is most capable at both. Last week we held another evening of Coffee House performances that ranged from rap to jazz. Right in the middle, Nicola took up the microphone and began singing a lovely ballad. Her tone is soft and round, and her phrasing and subtle use of vibrato caught every ear in the hall; the room was absolutely still as her peers listened intently. After she finished, I asked her who the piece was by, to which she responded, ‘’Taylor Swift”. I was surprised that there was any Taylor Swift that I hadn’t heard up to that point! Once you hear Nicola’s rendition of Dear John, you will immediately understand why she and our esteemed English teacher, Mr. John Kennedy, are ‘Swifties’.

Enjoy the performance!
