KES results at Metro Championships

All 8 KES wrestlers had a great weekend at the Metro Wrestling Championships. Every wrestler worked very hard, especially some who did not medal. Sweet little Samantha Ho was a tough competitor throughout the tournament. It would be hard to choose which of two of her four matches would have been selected as the KES “match of the day”. In a losing cause she nailed a 4 point move on a provincial champion and national silver medalist, and almost scored another four point throw in a closing flurry at the end of the match. She outlasted her competitor from Cole Harbour in a long drawn out affair that saw Samantha out work and out skill her opponent. Samantha gave every last bit of effort to win on points and place fourth overall. Alex Ondo placed a very respectable 2^nd after a tough loss against a provincial team wrestler from Saskatchewan, new to the Sackville team. She defeated all other opponents in her other three matches. Melanie Griess placed 4^th out of 7 competitors in her weight class. She continues to improve in every match and likes to try her luck at throwing. Tea Racozzi placed second once again with her only loss to her competitor from Duncan McMillan. She will need to ensure that she can be more offensive in order to capture the regional championship next week. She has a great chance at a medal at provincials, with more work on head control in her reaction wrestling.

 

We had two of our junior male wrestlers compete in the finals. Brisnel Etou Bosseba lost a very tough match, in the final of the 58 kg class, against his opponent from Horton, who he beat in the final at the previous tournament. Josh Mills drew a Canada Games Core team member in the final of the 76 kg class. His opponent is one of the more skilled wrestlers, in the tournament, and Josh will benefit from the experience. Josh was dominant throughout the day, in front of his numerous family members, who came to cheer on him and the team. He continues to gain practical experience against some very tough competition. Nathan Danquah was our only gold medal winner on the day and he showed mature class and a respect for the sport and his opponents in a couple of his matches. We were fortunate to have our captains and provincial champions from last year in attendance; Ross Traves and Ky Walsh assisted with coaching duties throughout the entire day. Both were on their reading week from Western and Memorial respectively. This was our last regular weekend tournament of the season and we will be at S.J.A. competing at the regional championships this coming weekend in Tantallon.
