21st Annual KES Wrestling Tournament Results
KES wrestlers shine at 21st annual. Tjhe KES team was comprised of many wrestlers new to the sport testing themselves in their first matches. Coach Walsh was very pleased with the results and looks forward to continued excellence throughout the year.
21st Annual KES Wrestling Tournament Results
King’s - Edgehill School hosted our 21st |Annual Wrestling Tournament on January 16th. We only had 10 of our 21 wrestlers participate in the tournament, due to a number of new wrestlers still preparing for competition and a few others with injuries. One of our newest wrestlers is grade 9 student, Tea Racozzi, our lone junior female wrestler who just started and is already showing great promise. She placed 2nd, losing to her opponent from Duncan Macmillan. She enjoyed two wins against her opponents from Five Bridges and Oyster Pond Academy. Our two other junior athletes in the tournament were Brisnel Etou Bosseba and Josh Mills. Brisnel placed 2nd overall, getting upset in the final, by his opponent from PEI. He was successful in his two matches leading up to the final. Josh, in his first matches ever, showed some great potential and this opportunity will provide him some focus on the demanding technical aspects of the sport. He is physically very capable and will be one to watch as the year progresses.
In the senior division, our two captains – Alex Ondo and Nathan Danquah both were upset and were disappointed not to win their weight classes. Alex was up on her opponent from Forrest Heights 4-0 and got rolled over and lost by a pin. She is certainly not satisfied with second place and will work hard to improve on her ground work. She wrestled very well on the weekend. Nathan was upset in an earlier match by his opponent from PV and won his third place match in the 100 kg weight class. Newcomer, Sonny Melendez Romero placed 4th in the standings behind Nathan, after losing to his teammate in the cross over. Sonny was pleased to be able to at least score early on Nathan and showed determination in the loss. He defeated his other opponents from Forrest Heights and HRHS. Melanie Griess was fantastic in her wrestling debut. She pinned two of her opponents and ended the day with a 5th place performance. She will continue to improve as she builds on her technique. Nic Gimenez was having a great tournament, in a very competitive and large 63 kg weight class, until he was withdrawn due to injury after a tough match. This match was in what was the KES “Match of the Day”, where he fought a tough opponent and courageously came back to win after starting the second round 8 points behind. Nic gave everything he had and it was a great win for him personally.
A very special thanks to all the many volunteers, especially the senior girls’ rugby team for covering the canteen services; they were kept extremely busy throughout the entire day. Mr. Hynes volunteered throughout the entirety of the event. Thanks for the support from the maintenance staff and the many people who supported us leading up to the event as well as the thankless efforts after the event. Gabbi Guiscardo volunteered throughout the tournament, after the tournament and after the Canada Games Wrestling camp on the Sunday. She did everything from working the clocks to sweeping and cleaning, after all were long gone.
The next action for the team is a club tournament in two weeks at UNB in Fredericton, at the Eastern Canadian Wrestling Championships. We hope to take around 5 competitors to this event over our end of January break.
