KES Values

At King’s-Edgehill School, we’re committed to the true meaning of education – to lead forth.

Except we’re not doing the leading – you are. Since 1788, our mission has been to create a stimulating, transformative culture that inspires students from all over the world to reach out and claim their true potential. Ours is a culture based on a balanced yet stimulating environment, mutual respect and supportive education.

Our balanced approach to student development means that all aspects of life are nurtured, from academics and athletics to public service and spirituality. The Campus Living programme at KES teaches and supports students not only in the classroom, but also in all aspects of his or her life, and specifically focuses on the following school values:

The School offers a healthy environment for learning with clearly defined authority, rules and order as a framework for emerging self-discipline. From the security of established parameters, students will learn the art of expressing their ideas with decorum, and, with the right balance of confidence and humility so that they emerge with minds of their own, a capacity to distinguish sense from nonsense, a depth of magnanimity capable of accepting other viewpoints, a moral independence and a readiness to detect other people's sensitivities.

The School's role is not to prevent failure, but rather to help students learn from mistakes in a way in which they can benefit from them. After all, the failure is not "in falling down, but in staying down". This approach encourages students to value knowledge for its own sake and to see its pursuit as a lifelong endeavour. Each student living on campus at KES is surrounded with a web of support. Students are urged to take advantage of new experiences that may be out of their comfort zone, and to persevere when faced with challenges.

The School encourages a spirit of intellectual exploration in all academic areas and of open-minded questioning in all areas of a student's personal growth and development. Teachers at KES stress a scholarly, rational and rigorous approach to learning, which includes an emphasis throughout all teaching on the proper use of language in both written and oral expression.

Students living on campus benefit from structured prep sessions in the evenings, as well as study groups, tutorials, and night classes. Students living on campus are able to connect with teachers and other academic support any day of the week, and the times for academic meetings can extend well beyond the typical school day.

The School recruits teachers and houseparents who are caring, secure and respectful human beings; such teachers demonstrate a real concern for the emotional, social and physical development of each individual. In addition, the School seeks teachers with strong academic backgrounds who, while concerned with student growth in specific subject areas, are equally concerned with the ways in which students learn and develop. KES Houseparents are often teachers and coaches, who also have a remarkable passion for working with, listening to, and encouraging students.

The School recognizes the spiritual element of life, encouraging each student to strengthen his/her whole self by developing the emotional, moral and spiritual aspects of life in concert with the intellectual and physical. At the same time, the School respects the rich diversity of religious backgrounds within our student community.

The School expects both teachers and students to be committed fully to the co-curricular life of the School. Students will thus capitalize on the many opportunities available out of class to develop into well-rounded individuals with lifelong habits of physical fitness, an appreciation of the arts, and such personal qualities as commitment to community service.

Our students living on campus benefit by having added time in the day to engage in various interests and opportunities, many of which are right at their doorstep. Students are taught how to infuse balance into their schedules on a daily basis, and before long, this becomes a natural routine and part of life in the KES community.

The foundation of both self-worth and effective co-operation is mutual respect. The School expects that all members of the KES community show respect for others. All teachers, students and support staff are entitled to that respect. Learning to live with one another in our diverse, international community, allows students to receive an education that is unlike any other.

The School celebrates the many cultures of our community, and together we take time to learn about our differences and teach students how important it is to care for each other. Embracing diversity, accepting all members of our community, and working together despite differences, are values that are strengthened in our campus life setting.
