Athletes of the Week

Athletes of the Week (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our athletic philosophy and School mission statement emphasizing gentleness and learning and dignity and respect. These student athletes also reflect the seven principles of “true sport” which states: go for it, play fair, respect others, keep it fun, stay healthy, include everyone, and give back.

From the beginning of School to September 25

Senior Girl – Evey Kennedy ‘23: In a challenging first couple of weeks of the season, Evey has played every game for our division one girls soccer team with heart and an energy that has uplifted her team and infected others with her extremely positive attitude. Evey played this way while learning and adapting to a new and challenging position and improved her play in that position each game. She is always attentive to her coaches' advice and direction and plays her game with an honesty and respect for her teammates and opponents. Evey is a great Highlander!

Senior Boy – Noah Burch-Pottie ‘23 has taken on the role as a leader on the division one boys soccer team since the first practice. After our KES Invitational tournament, he was voted to be team captain. He leads the team by example with his work ethic and positive attitude. Noah gave us the defensive stability that we needed in our first home game against Avon View High School. Due to injuries and a few players missing, we were not able to bring home the victory; however, Noah helped his teammates to play to their full potential by encouraging everyone without ever giving up. Well done, Noah!

Junior Boy – Alejandro (Alex) Arguelles ‘26 has proven his talent as a soccer player since day one. He was able to convince his coaches that he deserves a spot in the starting 11 on the division one boys soccer team. Alex played the full 90 minutes against town rival Avon View High School, where he created lots of pressure on the wing and supported his team defensively. Alex displayed exceptional fitness and an advanced skill set on the soccer pitch. The “Energizer Bunny” is a joke compared to him. Well done, Alex.

Junior Girl – Chelsea James ‘29: Even though it is her first year at KES, Chelsea is an active participant within our School community and takes advantage of all new opportunities. Chelsea has a go-for-it attitude. In sport, this principle is reflected through her daily commitment to dance. Each practice she arrives on time and ready to begin. Her voice is always heard during our post-meditation reflection discussions. Her energy is felt when learning new techniques and choreography. Chelsea rose to the challenge and helped lead the Terry Fox warm-up exercise for her community in front of everyone on center field. Her support was appreciated as she led by example and represented the KES dance community proudly. Thank you and excellent effort, Chelsea!

For the Week of September 26 – October 2

Senior Girl – Gabby Shaw ‘25 is the goalkeeper for the senior girls division one soccer team, and she had an outstanding game last week in Bridgewater against Park View Education Centre. The game ended in a 0-0 tie and Gabby had a few excellent game-saving stops. She made her game look easy by showing a lot of composure and confidence under a constant barrage of crosses and shots from the Park View players. The game went into a penalty shoot-out and Gabby shone even brighter! As well as scoring one of our two successful penalty kicks, Gabby saved three Park View penalty kicks to win the tie-braker extra point for the team. Gabby's constant positivity throughout the game gave the team energy to get the draw and she was without a doubt the player of the game. Bravo, Gabby!
