Stripping a photo of colour may create a classic impression for some photographs, but our student photographers’ intent this week was to eliminate emotional warmth. It is wintertime and naturally cold. Using filters in our phones’ cameras to capture images in black and white allowed us to create even colder photographs. The collection below is intentionally dark. Descriptive words such as grim, bleak, or stark are easily ascribed to the photos. The subject matter assists in these impressions. It is fascinating to see how a familiar building like Convocation Hall can become foreboding, imposing, or haunted when stripped of colour. Without colour there is no life, can be no life. The passage of time takes on new meaning. There is beauty but (spoiler alert!) not the kind that warms one’s heart.
