Day 1 of our 2022 School Sport (SNSS) Track and Field Provincial Championships got underway in Stellarton on Friday, June 2. Vinnie Armstrong ‘25 started off in the 400m with a personal best run to get into the final. In that race of the top eight in Nova Scotia, Armstrong put up a gutsy performance and finished just back of the podium in fifth place. Joining Vinnie in a display of 400m prowess, our junior girls continue to represent KES proudly with strong performances by Lillian Blois ‘27 and Natalia Shaw ‘27. Next up was Sophie Thomas ‘22 in her 100m race, the sixth of her life, having just started in track and field this year. Sophie blazed through the first round to qualify for finals where she finished seventh in the province among all senior girls.
On Day 2 in Stellarton on Saturday, June 3, Vinnie Armstrong ‘25 continued his string of personal best times and leadership by example with a strong performance in his 800m race today. Always a team player, Armstrong then raced to his soccer game to play the second half! Cameron Stephens ‘22 had a fantastic cold and windy morning in his high jump. Despite the poor conditions, Stephens added an amazing 10cm to his jump height from just last weekend. Ten must be the magic number because that’s how many seconds our junior girls improved in their 4x400m relay from last weekend. The team of Natalia Shaw ‘27, Lillian Blois ‘27, Laura Oulton ‘27 and Maanvi Manchineni ‘27 had smooth transitions and clearly pushed themselves to their best.
Thank you to Lillian’s mom, Ms. Shelley Skedden, for all the district and regional photos that appeared in the newsletter last week.
It was a challenging return to practice and competition this season for many reasons, but all of our athletes who competed over the past two weeks are excited to race again. For those really excited to continue, practices and meets will continue over the summer.
All the positive results could not be harvested without the coaching staff who make me look better than I am. Thank you to Ms. Sue Bouwman, Mr. Brodi Robinson, Mr. Mark Walker, Mr. Derek Bouwman, Ms. Judy DesRoches ‘02, and Mr. Jeff Smith for his continued positivity. Thank you also to Mr. Kim Walsh ‘79, Ms. Kim Shanks, Mr. Wade Trider and a special thank you to our Headmaster, Mr. Joe Seagram for his support.
