Mediocrity in World Championship

Some readers of this article may recall that this past March our King’s-Edgehill School robotics teams competed in Acadia University’s regional Robofest qualifier. At that event, out of 23 teams from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, the KES team of Runzhe Yan ‘22, Will Zhao ’21, Doreen Xing ‘23, and Victor Zhou ’22 (sporting the delightfully ironic team name “Mediocrity”) came in second place overall. This outstanding result qualified Mediocrity to compete in the Robofest Online World Championship this past Friday, September 24. At this event, the best teams from all around the world – Columbia, Taiwan, USA, Ghana, South Korea, Canada, and Saudi Arabia – competed in the same game from March, entitled StackRolls. In this game, autonomous robots had two minutes to stack toilet paper rolls and move them to a specific location on a game board. Without the help of their teammates who graduated last year, Runzhe and Victor represented King’s-Edgehill School at this event. Although they did not place among the top teams, I was most proud of them for competing with the best teams from around the world.
