Athletes of the Week

“Athletes of the Week” (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our Athletic Philosophy and School Mission Statement emphasizing gentleness and learning and dignity and respect.

For the Week of February 22nd – 28th
Senior Girl - Neila MacDonald: The KES Senior Girls’ Club Soccer team played the Halifax City U17AAA girls on Tuesday, February 23rd at the West Hants Sports Complex. Grade 11 team co-captain Neila MacDonald was a tower of power on defence as she constantly won tackles, won headers, and broke up one City attacking play after another. Neila pushed forward to produce 3 shots and countless passes that led to good scoring chances. Neila played so well she played every minute of the game! Well done, Neila!

Senior Boy - Vlad Kirillov: In a short period of time at our School, Vlad has played a long list of sports.  He has been a member of the cross-country team, the track and field team and through both sports he has also been a member of our new prep swim team.  It is in the pool where Vlad has made his biggest splash in KES sports, although he has been a significant presence in the wrestling room late in the season. In the pool, at our most recent time trial competition, Vlad earned three personal bests in the 200-meter breaststroke, 100-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle.  Even more impressive is that his times are now among the fastest in Canada for 17-year-old males.  Congratulations, Vlad.

Junior Boy - Jacob Singer started on the point for our first game of the year for our Junior Development Hockey team vs Wolfville Junior High last Thursday.  Full of energy, Jacob began the game by making great passes and thwarting our opponents’ rushes one time after another.  Once he got a feel for how the game was being played, Jacob began to play with more confidence and freedom that his substantial skating stride provided.  Before we knew it, Jacob was rushing the puck with vigour and managed to score, ending a super shift.  Jacob continued his commendable play throughout the game and scored later in the third period to help seal our team’s 5-2 win. Great job, Jacob!

Junior Girl - Ali MacLean is a very adaptable and talented athlete. She played a key role in our recent Development Hockey victory over Wolfville School, and she was a vibrant participant in the Hoopla Basketball Jamboree. Her flexibility and attitude are what makes our Junior programmes competitive and fun. Excellent work, Ally!

For the Week of March 1st – 7th
Senior Girl - Bella Turner-Galaise, our team captain, won an individual GOLD medal, and she led the Senior Girls' Wrestling team to a first-place finish at the Western Region final wrestling tournament at King's-Edgehill School on March 6. She balanced wrestling with hockey all season and consistently displayed the kind of excellence that is achievable by a multi-sport athlete with her leadership and technical prowess. This is in addition to being a FULL IB Diploma candidate! Congratulations, Bella!

Senior Boy – Haichuan (River) Qi had an excellent end to his high school wrestling career on March 6 by leading the Senior Boys' team to a Regional GOLD medal during the tournament held here at King's-Edgehill School. He is a great student of our sport and his technical expertise and considerable power were on display during his three matches which resulted in an individual GOLD medal for him as well. River is excited to explore his wrestling opportunities at the University of Toronto next year. Great work, River!

Junior Boy - Finn Bryant found his athletic niche this week with the Junior Boys’ Basketball team. His shooting and ball handling were a key to our success, especially during the epic buzzer-beater game versus the Hantsport Hawks. At Hoopla, Finn won the skill competition taking the Run Dribble Shoot prize over 45 competitors! Well done, Finn!

Junior Girl - Gabby Shaw had her first game experience with the Prep Basketball team on March 26th vs Piranha U16 Club team. Gabby put her nerves aside and had a fantastic well-rounded debut with the older KES team playing 19 minutes, scoring 7 points, (including two - 3 pointers), 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Every member of the Prep programme was excited for Gabby when she was called to play, and she did not disappoint. She will be our lead point guard of the future! Excellent stuff, Gabby!
