Fickes, Donald George

Passed away April 24, 2020
Born in Annapolis Royal, he was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Fickes. Don was a graduate of Yarmouth Regional Vocational School in Marine Radio Technology and worked in his field for the Canadian Marconi Company. For a number of years he captained his beloved Golden Scarab and was very proud of his ability to rescue ships in distress. In later years, Don settled on his hobby farm in Martins River where he was able to live his life on the ocean and enjoy his love of horses. He was known to many of the locals for sleigh rides and hayrides, which were such joyous times for family and friends. Don ran Oceanus Marine building beautiful rock walls which dot the coastline along the South Shore. Don's zest for life and incredible sense of humour was a true joy to the many friends he made throughout his life. He enjoyed the lifestyle that winters in Florida afforded him until he was no longer able to travel. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathi Oxholm-Fickes; stepmother, Mary Anne Fickes, Annapolis Royal; twin brother, Jack (Anna), Martins River; stepsisters, Barbara (Glenn) Pate, Mahone Bay; Heather (Ken) Fickes-Foote, Bridgewater; stepdaughters, Jillian Cluett and Ashley Cluett, both of Dartmouth; and several nieces and nephews. A small family committal service will take place in Christ Church, Dartmouth. Special thanks to the caring staff of Oceanview Continuing Care Centre whose excellence both in standard of care and compassion, treated Don with love and respect. Memorial gifts to Feed Nova Scotia (a cause close to Don's heart) or a charity of your choice. To view or place an online message of condolence please visit: www.mattatallfuneralhome.com
