Objectives
King’s-Edgehill School Internet Access and Use

1. to provide Internet access as a medium to inform, educate and provide access to the ideas of humanity.
2. to conduct and share research and to share ideas in pursuit of curriculum outcomes
3. to communicate with peers and experts to solve curriculum related problems
4. to become familiar with career opportunities in a global information economy
5. to develop information literacy and technological competence necessary for meaningful employment in an information economy

Guidelines
King’s-Edgehill School Internet Code of Conduct

The School’s Responsibility

• clearly communicate with students and parents, the purposes, benefits, and risks associated with the use of Internet resources
• select and recommend to students Internet resources and sites which support and extend learning
• inform students that communications on networks are often public in nature and that privacy is rarely available
• ensure the system’s operations and the confidentiality protection of the user’s work located on the school’s electronic system
• disable any Internet account when it has been determined that the Acceptable Use Policy has been violated  (The network administrator has the right to view/and or delete user files without prior notice to the user when the administrator deems the files at issue to be harmful to the electronic system or the School in general.)

 
The Students Responsibility

• follow school guidelines for the acceptable use of school-provided networked information resources, electronic systems, and Internet
• use school-provided networked information resources and electronic systems responsibly as part of a planned curriculum learning activity.  (This does not include the use of any network capable games other than those deemed suitable by the school.)
• exercise extreme caution when releasing personally identifying information to any person or electronic system. (Lurkers with access to this information have harassed and harmed children or members of their families)
• backup his/her personal electronic files on his/her personal machine. (All files stored on the School’s servers are backed up daily Monday-Friday)
• assume with his/her parent/guardian, all responsibility resulting from financial obligations entered into by the student.


King’s-Edgehill School Acceptable Use

• Students will not use school-provided Internet access only with direct teacher permission.
• Students’ personal information such as their addresses, telephone numbers, parents’ names and home or work addresses/telephone numbers, will not be published by the students or School.
• Students who receive information messages that make them feel uncomfortable will immediately report the occurrence to a responsible school official.
• Students will never agree to meet with someone they encounter online without the prior permission of their parents/guardians.
• Students will follow the Schools’ established rules for going online.
• Students will not attempt to access private or personal materials, information, or files of others without their prior consent.  Students may view published web pages and public files obtained from them appropriately.
• Students will not vandalize, damage, or disable the work of another individual or organization.
• Students will not access, manipulate, alter or attempt to damage, disable or destroy technology or computer files.
• Students can copy only material and files for which they have permission.
• Students will not access, create or distribute harassing, pornographic, obscene, racist, sexually explicit, or threatening material, imagery or language.
• Students will not use school-provided Internet access for illegal purposes or for non-approved commercial purposes.
• Students will not store files or programs on the internal hard drive of any desktop computer belonging to the school without proper consent.

King’s-Edgehill School Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Policy

Because the content shared by "peer-to-peer" applications is in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), and because they are in violation of King’s-Edgehill School policy by generating excessive network traffic and interfering with the normal functioning of the network, these applications are prohibited on the King’s-Edgehill School campus.  This means that:

1. Peer-to-peer file sharing applications including, but not limited to, BitTorrent, Kazaa, Limewire and others, may not be installed or used on computers owned or managed by King’s-Edgehill School.
2. Peer-to-peer file sharing applications including, but not limited to, BitTorrent, Kazaa, Limewire and others, may not be installed or used on computers attached to the King’s-Edgehill School network, regardless of their ownership.
3. The King’s-Edgehill School Information Technology staff may, in order to ensure compliance with King’s-Edgehill School policies inspect and remove any of the prohibited software from any equipment currently or previously attached to the King’s-Edgehill School network.

Violators of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with current King’s-Edgehill School disciplinary policies.

Consequences of Unacceptable Use

Disciplinary actions related to student access to electronic resources include but are not limited to the following:
a. loss of privilege to the Internet and other electronic sources for a time period appropriate to the transgression.  Such a loss may result in the inability of the student to complete successfully the curriculum learning outcomes.
b. suspension for serious offences
c. expulsion can occur as a last resort
d. when appropriate, law enforcement agencies may be involved
