Coaching

Our coaches care deeply about our student-athletes. We are committed to helping our players excel in the classroom and on the rugby pitch. Preparation inside and outside the classroom is vital. Coaches, in conjunction with teachers, help ensure that each student-athlete is fulfilling his classroom responsibilities. The second phase of preparation happens in practice and training sessions. Each practice is designed to develop our skill base, decision-making abilities, mental and physical strength, speed and fitness.

The Coaches understand that rugby is fundamentally still a player’s game; therefore, we will do everything in our power to prepare you for success. As players, you will be asked to use that preparation and match it with your athletic talent and desire to win. You will always be empowered to make decisions and adjustments within the flow of the game (ex. quick taps, quick throws, kicks, marks, changing defensive alignment). The coaching staff believes that a well prepared team never makes “bad” decisions, although it may, at times, have “bad” execution. In matches, your focus should be on execution. Because you trust your training, you will make the right decision.

Our coaching staff does not believe in luck. We believe in preparation. The best prepared teams are the most confident teams. Confident teams play faster, harder and longer than teams that lack confidence. Therefore, the Coaches at KES make an extraordinary sacrifice of time and energy to prepare the First XV for the physical and mental demands of competition.

Motivation

"The more I talk to athletes, the more convinced I become that the method of training is relatively unimportant. There are many ways to the top, and the training method you choose is just the one that suits you best. No, the important thing is the attitude of the athlete, the desire to get to the top."
 - Herb Elliott

"A great coach is an artist. You have to be creative, and you have to capture enough kids to create your artwork."
 - Pat Tyson

"The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers."

- Ralph Nader
