Captaincy

Because rugby is a player’s game, it is paramount that our players exhibit leadership on and off the pitch. Whether leading by example, expressing directions verbally, or empowering others to lead, captains are called upon to set and maintain a high standard of leadership. They demand superior conduct and execution from themselves and all of their teammates. Decisions are made and communicated by all players; however, our captains are given the additional responsibility of maintaining our team’s focus tactically and emotionally.

In addition, our captains are charged with the extra responsibility of encouraging leadership in our younger players. By giving guidance to up-and-coming players, a captain’s legacy is far greater than his win-loss record or the number of championships won.

Captains and senior players will be included in the game-planning and player selection process. Their unique insights and opinions are valued. It is important that our captains help communicate these plans to the rest of the team and execute them in practice and competition. If plans need to be refined or adjusted our captains will have the freedom to do so. Captains must understand that our team must take advantage of opportunities that present themselves outside the game plan (ex. Clear overlaps, catching the opposition napping, or recognizing a misaligned defense).

Our captains, in a polite and calm tone, will be the only people permitted to speak with the referee or linesperson. The referee shall always be referred to as “Sir” or “Referee” and be respected at all times. Although a captain may want clarification of a ref’s decision, he must understand that one may not be available within the flow of the game. We must understand that our play must adapt to the referee’s interpretation of the Laws of Rugby. The faster we adapt and the listen to those instructions, the greater the advantage we will have.

"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will."

"The speed of the leader determines the rate of the pack."

- Wayne Lukas
