Below you will see a listing of the IB courses offered at KES:

  • IB English – This course is offered at the Higher and Standard Level with the examination at the end of Grade 12.
  • IB French – Most students at KES write the Standard Level in Grade 12, but students with a strong background may opt for the Higher Level with the permission of the teacher.
  • IB German – German is offered for two different groups of students.  There is A2 Higher Level for native German speakers and ab initio at the Standard Level for the beginner. The courses focus on the same four skills as does the French course.
  • IB Spanish – Spanish is also offered as A2 and ab initio.  Course content is similar to the French course and the assessments are the same as for German.
  • IB History – Students may write either Standard History in Grade 11, or they may choose Higher Level at the end of Grade 12.  Diploma candidates often choose to write the Standard Level in Grade 11 which lightens the course load in Grade 12.
  • IB Economics – This is a Standard Level course available at present on an individual basis, in consultation with and with the permission of the teacher.
  • IB Biology – Biology at KES is offered at the Higher Level only with the examination at the end of Grade 12.
  • IB Chemistry – Chemistry may be taken at various levels and in various grades at KES.  Candidates wishing to write the Standard Level at the end of Grade 11, take IB Chemistry in Grades 10 and 11; those who want Standard at the end of Grade 12 take it in 11 and 12, while those opting for Higher Level also take the course in Grades 11 and 12.
  • IB Physics – Physics at KES is taken at the Standard Level, and the examination is usually written at the end of Grade 12.
  • IB Environmental Systems – Environmental Systems at KES is offered at the Standard Level only.
  • IB Mathematics – Most students at KES choose to study Mathematics at the Standard Level, but students may opt for the Higher Level with permission of the teacher.  A thorough background in Mathematics at this level must include a sound knowledge of calculus, and students are required to take the separate (non-IB) calculus course.
  • IB Math Studies – This course is being considered for the future. (September 2006 for Grade 11 students.)  It fulfills the requirements for a Math course for the IB Diploma but is not recommended for those students who wish to study sciences, maths or engineering at university. Students choosing this option do not need to take the separate calculus course.  
  • IB Computer Science – This course is offered at the Standard Level and Higher Level.
  • IB Music – Students wishing to study music at the IB Level do so in consultation with the teacher.  Higher or Standard Level may be taken, but those who wish to further their career in music should take the Higher Level.
  • IB Art – The course evaluation at the Standard Level is done 100% on the Studio art work examined by a visiting examiner.  Ten to twenty pieces of work in various media are required.
