At KES, we began making inquiries into the International Baccalaureate in 1979, in a quest to provide some kind of a standard for our students where no provincial or federal one previously existed.  Mr. Gil Nichol from the New York office of the IB came to KES that year and met with several teachers and the Headmaster, Mr. Menzies.  The staff was enthusiastic about the programme and we began teaching the courses in 1981, graduating our first Diploma candidate in 1983.  We are proud of being the 6th school in Canada and the 147th internationally to join what is now a network of over 1400 schools worldwide.

Over the years we have introduced many courses at the IB level as teacher and student interest has warranted. At times the rigorousness and difficulty of the programme can be intimidating for students and teachers alike, but there are many aspects of the IB which appealed to the staff in 1981, and that maintain our interest today, including the universality of the programmes as well as the breadth of scope.
